This flute bears the company name WW Haynes, owned by William Winthrop Haynes, son of William S Haynes, owner of Wm S Haynes & Co. Papa Haynes wasn’t at all happy about that, so he successfully sued his son for infringing on his trademark name. WW Haynes eventually teamed up with Schwelm to form the Haynes-Scwhelm Co. (If you want to read about their family drama, click here. It’s juicy!)

Family drama aside, this flute is a great player. Its sound is well-balanced, with a touch of texture and earthiness. The low register is flexible, allowing for lots of color options. The second and third registers are vibrant and lyrical. WW Haynes learned a lot from his father!

The scale is tuned to A=438 Hz, but the flute plays well at 440 with the headjoint pulled out to 1/16″. The flute has a B shake, a common feature of flutes of this era. (A technician can convert the B shake to a Bb shake.) The pads are older but in very good shape; they seal well, and the flute is very responsive. The original case is included.
