This flute has an incredible history. The sole owner was, and still is, John Solum. He studied flute with William Kincaid and has become an influential flutist as a soloist. He is well known for both his baroque and modern flute playing and has made numerous recordings under various labels. In all of his recordings under the EMI label, John plays on Powell 3330. In 1972, just two years after purchasing the flute, John released a recording under MSR of live performances. We link to a few of these recordings below. If you want to learn more about John Solum, you can read about his bio on Wikipedia.
Powell 3330 is unlike any flute made during that same time period. In combination with its fine craftsmanship and decades of playing by a highly-skilled flutist in sound production, the flute has a superb texture, reminiscent of finely crafted felt. This is one of those flutes that has taken on the character of its owner! The upper overtones are well balanced against the fundamental tone, much more so than other Powell flutes from the 1960s or 70s. The flute also has a consistent tone color throughout the registers. Even in the third register maintains the tonal colors heard in the first register. It’s rare to find a flute of this tonal caliber, and a lot of it has to do with who played it – John Solum.
The flute has been overhauled by Gary Lewis and is in exceptional condition.
