In a word – exotic. This is one of the rarest headjoints of unique metallurgy in which the tubing contains four metals of the platinum family – platinum, iridium, ruthenium, and palladium. Silver only exists in the lip plate and crown; gold is in the riser. Powell made only a small number, maybe less than a dozen, of these headjoints. Only two flutes exist of this material.
In the words of Steven Finley, who was at Powell when Pt*4 was in production, the sound of these headjoints has “the lustrous quality of silver and the elusive mercurial specialness of platinum.” Production, however, ceased when producing the tubing proved exceedingly challenging and expensive.
In our testing of this headjoint, it pairs beautifully with a heavy wall flute (0.018″) though some tape is required for a snug fit. The sound is as Steven describes. With thin wall flutes (0.014″), the headjoint most likely will fit, but may be too vibrant and powerful for some light tubes.
